HOW TO GET YOUR LICENSE

Can I take my knowledge test online before visiting a DMV office?

1st Requirements, if you are under the age of 17 ½ and you are new to getting your license. a. You must take Drivers Education course in-classroom or on-line (most go online and as long as the program covers rules and laws for California state it doesn’t matter who you take it from). Requirements for the online test Eligibility: You must be a California resident under 18 years old applying for a provisional instruction permit. Application: You must first fill out the online driver's license application and get parental consent. Technology: A computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection are required. Tablets and mobile devices are not supported. Testing Window: The online test must be initiated between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. Proctoring: The test is proctored online through a webcam, and you must remain on camera for the duration of the exam. Attempt Limit: You are allowed a maximum of two attempts to pass the online test.

2nd Requirements to get your permit, after receiving your Driver’s Education certificate: •To apply for a provisional permit you must be at least 15 1/2 but, under 18 years of age. •Have a driver’s education completion certificate if you are under 17 ½ years of age. •Must have an acceptable birth date/legal presence document (original copies only will be accepted)(can be uploaded when filling out your application eDL44. Click here for more details. •Provide your true full name. •Upload or take acceptable residency documents if you have never had a California driver license or California identification card. •Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration. (your name on the SS card must match your birth certificate exactly). •Pay a nonrefundable application fee. (This fee entitles you to three exams of any type within the 12-month period and pays for both the instruction permit and the driver license. If all requirements are not met within the 12-month period, the application becomes void and all steps must be completed again.) •Pass a vision exam. •Submit a completed and signed DMV Driver license application (eDL 44) form. The link will take you online where you can start the process. •Have your parents' or guardians' signatures on the application form eDL 44. (may be done online) •Take your written test at the DMV or online (click here for details). A passing score is 80%. NOTE: READ YOUR CALIFORNIA HAND BOOK! According to the state of California DMV statistics, it shows that overall fail rate for applicants on their first-attempt for the written test is 51 percent, Clovis CA is 82% for teens. •Examiners in Clovis CA DMV state that 82 percent of teenagers fail their first-attempt on the written test in the Clovis office. They say the reason is that not enough teens are reading the California Hand Book...click here for a PDF version of Book. •The written test is taken on a TouchScreen Test Machine or online (here are the requirements). Note: To allow you sufficient time for testing, DMV will not be administering knowledge tests after 4:30 pm. If you are over 17 ½ but under 18 years of age, you may take your test and get your permit without having to take the driver’s education or driver training programs however, you will not be able to take the driving test until you turn 18.

CONGRATULATIONS YOU PASSED AND RECEIVED YOUR PERMIT!

A. You have your permit! You can now sign up here on our website,, pay, schedule, reschedule or cancel your driver training lessons online. You can click here to register (sign up) and pay for your driver’s training sessions online. B. NOTE: READ YOUR PERMIT! Your permit will NOT be valid until you have your FIRST driver training session with a Driving Instructor and they sign off on your permit. Failure to do so may result in the loss of your permit till age 18; this includes driving in parking lots open to the public. But if you reach the age of 17 1/2 it will be OK to drive with anyone 25 years of age or older.

Requirements to take the DMV drive test (in-car) if you are under18 years of age, you must:

A. Have your provisional instruction permit in hand. B. Have your permit for a minimum of six (6) months and 1 day or wait until your 18th birthday. C. Drivers Training completion certificate (gold in color). Driver’s Training consist of six (6) hours taken over any 3 days, 2 hour sessions. Once you complete Drivers Training you will be issued a Behind-the-Wheel completion certificate (Gold color). Do not lose your certificate you will need this for your DMV Drive Test. D. Completed driver education. E. Be at least 16 years of age. F. Have completed 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 years of age or older. The adult must have a valid California driver license and certify to the 50 hours of practice (by signing your permit). At least 10 of the 50 hours must be done at night. G. Have a drive test scheduled at the DMV. H. A licensed driver must accompany you day of the drive test.

Day of the in-vehicle Drive Test at the DMV you must bring:

1.Your permit signed by a parent or guardian accepting liability for the minor. 2.Provide proof of financial responsibility (car insurance for the car used on the drive test) (your name is not required to be on the document for the drive test or drivers training) 3.Current vehicle registration for car used on drive test. 4.Your completion of Behind-the-Wheel certificate (gold color) (for minors only) given to you by your Driving Instructor. The in-vehicle Drive Test is about 20 minutes...Good Luck!! If you fail your drive test, you must wait 14 days (not including the day the test was failed) before you may take the test again. There is a fee of $7 to retest. If you fail the driving test three times, your application is no longer valid and you must reapply. Once you pass the driving test, DMV will issue you a temporary DL until you receive your new DL in the mail. The temporary DL is valid for 60 days. You will receive your DL via mail within 3-4 weeks. If you haven’t received your new DL after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 to check the status.
